November 10th Update: Rusty is now running around and is very full of himself. His knee surgery was a complete success. He no longer has a limp and just goes and goes and goes! A bonus -- now he has one of his old house mates, "Lucky", being fostered with him. Luck is from the Animal Shelter. Rusty loves having another dog around and his foster mom reports he adores children, too, and gets along well with cats. Rusty is now available for adoption and is looking for a home that will appreciate his enormous character and heart to match. This is a very fun dog that just leaves you smiling. He has a contagious, heart-warming personality. Read on for more photos and for his whole rescue story! October 23, 2004: UPDATES! Rusty showing off his shaved leg! Luxuriating on his bed and banky. Believe me, He's beggining! Rusty resting and healing..... Rusty has been doing good! We left him at the house yesturday for a little

October 15, 2004: Rusty 4 surgery went very well and he is doing great. His foster mom is picking him up tomorrow night and a second foster mom is going to pick him up Sat night till Wed and then back to his first foster mom's for convalesces. October 8, 2004: Happy News! Two other Rescue Groups have arranged to rescue Rusty's two canine buddies, Lucinda and Baby! Rusty has two bad knees. The plan is to operate on the worst knee, let him recuperate and monitor to see if the second knee improves. Rusty's hips are not bad. Rimadyl was prescribed and after just one day it is obvious that Rusty feels much, much better (see the very bottom picture of Rusty, below. This was taken before Rimadyl was administered. All the remaining photos are taken after one day on Rimadyl). October 7, 2004: Rusty, an overweight senior golden-lab cross, came to GRRF from the Fairbanks Animal Shelter. Rusty absolutely endeared himself to the shelter staff with his gentle humor, and by carrying his food bowl around the shelter grounds. He has been an indoor dog, and is gentle and well-mannered. Rusty had been relinquished to the animal shelter due to a tragic house fire which rendered his former owner homeless. Rusty was relinquished to the shelter along with his two canine buddies, who are still at the shelter, due to be euthanized. Unfortunately, GRRF lacks foster families to be able to help out Rusty's buddies. Rusty has a bad limp. This appears to be caused by torn cruciate ligaments (bad knees) which has caused atrophying of his leg muscles. Rusty probably also has bad hips; and since he is senior and overweight, he may be suffering from arthritis. Rusty will be undergoing a complete physical examination and extensive X-raying today (Thursday) to find out if surgery can help him out.
