 MOOSE

2/11/06

Moose is a 22 month old, neutered male, purebred chocolate Labrador Retriever.  He was relinquished to the Animal Shelter due to what the owners called dribbling urine and food allergies.  They claimed to have spend thousands of dollars on him and thought some other family would want him.   Unfortunately the shelter was very full and they couldn't really put a dog up for adoption with so many health problems.  They kindly and luckily called GRRF.  We already had tried helping this family and the medication they had for the dog they did not use or bring to the shelter.  Moose's vet check showed no signs of allergies at this time.  He has a very slight ear infection in one ear and has drops to go in twice a day.  He coat is gorgeous.  They said it was worse in the summer.  We suspect he has seasonal allergies and a new owner show keep an eye out for this in the summer and get vet attention quickly and medication can be given through the summer.  It is much less expensive to deal quickly with allergies and keep up with medications.  We have put Moose on a hypoallergenic diet to keep his skin looking good but a new owner can slowly try normal food as it very well maybe just seasonal allergies and nothing to do with food.  Moose's urinalysis is normal and no signs of infection.  The medication we donated to the owner was for incontinence and they only used it for two days.  In fostercare we kept Moose off medications to see just what was the problem.  We have had him a week and his very caring fosterparents say he has had no problems what so ever.  In fact he is perfectly housebroken.  They have noticed he is very submissive and afraid of certain movements.  We now suspect Moose may have been submissively urinating to please the owner and when he got in trouble for this he tried harder by peeing more.  He foster parents are experienced Lab folks and Moose is one of the dearest young Labs they have worked with.  He is easily trained but with a quite tone and lots of praise.  He is very good with other dogs and is small in size.

This is an outstanding Lab boy and will make some lucky family the perfect family addition.

Note- Moose came down with kennel cough and is on antibiotics.  He spent a day at the vet clinic getting fluids and care.  While there we showed him to a kind and caring couple.  Moose will go on trial with them after he feels better on Monday or so.  This couple has been waiting for just the right dog and Moose is so dear he totally melted the wife's heart.  We will keep you updated!!
