5/2/05 "Special Needs Dog" |
|
Dixie is a 4 yr old labrador, german shepherd cross, spayed female. Dixie was adopted from us years ago when she was 18 months old. Dixie was one of my favorite foster dogs. She is extremely happy and great with children. We adopted her to a wonderful family with small children. About a year later, Dixie came down with a medical disorder call autoimmune thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). Dixie went on treatment and did very well for a while. Now her family has had a death in the family and they unable to care for her. This was very difficult for them. Dixie is currently on Prednisone and an immune drug. We are hoping her platelets will respond and her bloodwork will look more normal. Dixie will then be weaned off her med's and no one knows for how long but although this is certainly not a common problem in dogs it is occasional seen and many dogs life out their lives comfortably. Dixie needs a home that can see to it she gets her medications and can afford her vet checks and bloodwork when needed. Dixie is very loyal and loving. She is a great dog and really doesn't know she is ill. She loves to play and gets along with most dogs very well. 6/2/05 UPDATE - Dixie is doing great and is in complete remission. Once on Prednisolone and Imuran (immune stimulate) Dixie responded very well. She being weaned off all medications and her platelet count is doing so much better. 7/4/05 UPDATE - Dixie's foster mom, Dr. Eastman, DVM (great to have a vet for a foster mom) says Dixie is now off all medication and just a dream to have around. We have many folks interested in Dixie but she is tall dog and some are put off by her size. She is as gentle as she is big. She adores Dr. Eastman but we will have to move her to a new foster home soon as Dr. Eastman is about due to have a baby. 7/10/05 UPDATE - Dixie is with another great foster mom, Kim who works at Aurora Animal Clinic. She has a male german shep. that Dixie just loves to play with. She moved right in and made herself comfortable. Dixie is not shy. 8/3/05 UPDATE - Dixie is going on trial to a special family in Juneau that has a male dog that looks very similar to her and they are looking for a playmate for him. They have already talked to their vet about Dixie and she is doing just great!! We will keep you posted on "Dixie's grand adventure"!!! 8/5/05 UPDATE - Dixie is now in Juneau and doing great. Sandra and her new family picked her up at the airport and took her home for a meeting with their male lab/shep cross. Everything went well and Sanda called they were all doing great. Good luck to Dixie and she deserves a great and loving home!!!! Thank you to Dr. Jeannie Maddux for caring for Dixie in the past and getting her all the right medications. Thank you to Dr. Margie Eastman for fostering, caring, and taking on continuing Vet care for Dixie. She was the reason Dixie went into remission so easily and quickly. Dr. Eastman and her patient husband have four dogs of their own and they loving fostered Dixie for 9 weeks. Thank you to Kim for fostering her this past three weeks and to her patient husband and friendly shepard and playmate to Dixie, Quinton. Thank you to Golden Retriever Rescue of Fairbanks Board of Directors for allowing Dixie's ongoing treatment and faith that she could be treated and placed. You all are the best!!! Thank you to Alaska Airlines Freight Department for taking extra special care of Dixie on her flight and helping us get her the most direct route to Juneau. Thank you to Sandra and her family for continuing to inquire about Dixie, offering to help pay her medical bills and for offering to provide Dixie the loving and caring home she so deserves.
