Dakota is a 3 year old, spayed female, purebred Golden Retriever. Her old family has recently had a hard time keeping her on the property. She has been picked up as a stray numerous times. She knows just how to stop traffic with her good looks and she jumps into any car that will have her. Dakota is very lucky she has never been seriously injured. Her owner has other breeds of dogs that stay on the property while he is gone and recently cannot get her to do the same. We with goldens know you are asking the impossible (even with most other breeds too). Dogs left to their own devises will do things for fun and attention. Dakota loves people and knows that a car ride and treats are just a busy road away. This is a very dangerous way to leave a dog while at work. Please know that dogs should never be left unattended while outside. There are just too many bad things that can happen to them: cars, moose, traps, dogfights, coyotes, wolves, porcupines, chickens, livestock, being a nuisance to your neighbor and being shot at. We unfortunately have seen the bad results of this and cannot express enough, please find a way to contain your pet while you are gone. We have many resources and information on helping folks with this problem. Dakota's owner relinquished her so she could find a home with someone home more and that could spend more time with her. He did think the world of her but was just not able to accommodate her needs with his work schedule. Dakota is a very popular dog and many kind folks have assisted her. Dakota has had her vet check done and other than an mild ear infection, she is in great shape and has a lovely coat that was well taken care of. Dakota is an extremely friendly and attentive golden that thrives on pleasing. 4/19/06- Dakota is on trial with her prospective new owner in Anchorage that has been waiting for an active golden to keep up with her. Dakota is already enrolled in dog obedience classes and gets to run with her owner on the beautiful coastal trails. Now she can visit people and stay active but always with her owner present to keep her out of trouble and safe. Thank you to all who helped Dakota and kindly took her home and to the shelter for working so well with her owner and keeping up a good relationship with all involved.
